Sts. Peter and Paul
2 Timothy 4:6-8, 17-18 + Matthew 16:13-19
A Defining Question
He said to them, “But who do you say that I am? Matthew 16:15
Clearly, Jesus is a teacher. First, he asks the disciples to give him feedback about what everyone else is saying about him. Then Jesus zeroes in on a question directed toward each of them: “But who do you say that I am?”
There is no escaping this defining question. This is a time when students in a class would cast their eyes downward as if studying their notes, hoping the teacher wouldn’t call on them. A good teacher knows that if we can name something, we can grow in clarity and understanding. Peter’s seemingly spontaneous response is profound.
Jesus’ question is directed toward each of us as well. “Who do you say that I am?” Alternatively: Who am I in your life? How might knowing me make a difference in how you move through this world day by day?
