Stormy Weather

He said to them, “Why are you terrified, O you of little faith?” Matthew 8:26

When I was working in TV news, the executive producer had a large print of a famous painting in his office: Caravaggio’s dramatic depiction of The Storm at SeaOne afternoon during a meeting, my boss pointed to the picture. “You know what that is?” he asked. “That’s television. A storm hits, nothing is working, people are crying and throwing up. It’s like death every week.” He beamed. “What a business, right?”

Right! But that’s not just television. That’s life.

This episode in Matthew’s Gospel comes after Jesus has performed several miracles – including cleansing a leper and healing Peter’s mother-in-law. And yet, still his Apostles haven’t learned to trust. Sound familiar?

When the storms of life are getting worse, remember who’s in charge. Take hold of faith! The winds may howl, the waves may surge, but in the end, trust the Jesus is steering the ship. We may not realize in until later, but he always gets us where we need to be.
