One Sign Really Matters
This generation is an evil generation, it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it except the sign of Jonah. Luke 11:29
It’s fair to ask why Jesus becomes so animated about seeking signs. Referring to his contemporaries as an “evil generation” for doing so, he’s clearly pulling no punches.
Here’s how I make sense of it. Seeking a sign is a form of hedging my bets, stopping short of entrusting myself fully to Christ’s lordship over my life. What have you done for me lately., I am wont to ask, as if to be so presumptuous to put God to the test. This “show me” attitude is a disguise for my reluctance to let go and let God. This is what I am brought to see.
Most regrettably, it turns my attention away from the one sign that really matters, the love of God poured out in the Paschal Mystery.
