Celebrating Jesus, Emmanuel
In those days a decree went out from Casar Augustus… And Joseph too went up… to the city of David that is called Bethlehem… to be enrolled with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. Luke 2:1, 4-5
Today our minds and hearts overflow with tender images of the first Christmas: a young couple, lowly shepherds, singing angles, a bright star and, of course, the newborn Baby. At the same time, we remember the larger context of his diving Incarnation, coming into human history. Jesus was born of Mary among a people living under the brutal domination of the Roman Empire. He came not as one removed from injustices and cruelty but as one immersed in humanity’s suffering and pains.
Through Jesus’ life and teaching, he offered healing and hope for our wounded world by advocating not power and control but loving service of others. His way is simple yet daunting. But the good news is this: Jesus is still Emmanuel, God-with-us. As we strive to walk in his footsteps, we know he is with us every step of the way. That is why we can truly say every day: Merry Christmas!
